Summary

If This Gets Out is an absolute showstopper! Equal parts edgy and adorable, this bright, joyful book has everything I look for in a queer YA romance。” —Phil Stamper, bestselling author of The Gravity of Us

Eighteen-year-olds Ruben Montez and Zach Knight are two members of the boy-band Saturday, one of the biggest acts in America。 Along with their bandmates, Angel Phan and Jon Braxton, the four are teen heartbreakers in front of the cameras and best friends backstage。 But privately, cracks are starting to form: their once-easy rapport is straining under the pressures of fame, and Ruben confides in Zach that he’s feeling smothered by management’s pressure to stay in the closet。

On a whirlwind tour through Europe, with both an unrelenting schedule and minimal supervision, Ruben and Zach come to rely on each other more and more, and their already close friendship evolves into a romance。 But when they decide they’re ready to tell their fans and live freely, Zach and Ruben start to truly realize that they will never have the support of their management。 How can they hold tight to each other when the whole world seems to want to come between them?

This book made me feel things! I could feel their emotions and relate to most of them, it got me stressed out right before they kiss and moments before and many moments after。 Love love love all the boys but Zach is my bi king。 Saturday deserved way better (especially Ruben) and i'm glad they found what they deserve and themselves along the way。 This book made me feel things! When I tell you I devoured this book ‼️‼️ I literally stayed up until four in the morning reading this absolute perfection of a novel。 I’ve loved Sophie Gonzales’s books ever since I read Only Mostly Devasted like two years ago。 I felt seen。 Then Perfect On Paper came out and once again she hit it out of the ballpark with the bi rep。 And in this book, I felt that amazing visibility again with Zach。 I’ve gone through those same experiences and had those same thoughts and to see them reflected on When I tell you I devoured this book ‼️‼️ I literally stayed up until four in the morning reading this absolute perfection of a novel。 I’ve loved Sophie Gonzales’s books ever since I read Only Mostly Devasted like two years ago。 I felt seen。 Then Perfect On Paper came out and once again she hit it out of the ballpark with the bi rep。 And in this book, I felt that amazing visibility again with Zach。 I’ve gone through those same experiences and had those same thoughts and to see them reflected on paper was genuinely so amazing。 But, of course, this book wasn’t only Sophie。 I’ve only ever read on Cale Dietrich book, and that book wasn’t my favorite, but, I did love the vibes。 And in this book it was honestly an immaculate achillean love story coming from him and Sophie。 It also definitely got me on board to check out more of his works。 So overall a great book that made me feel seen。 Love the authors 💗💗 。。。more

F Bomb Ahead。。。 Don't open the spoiler if you don't want to see it。。。 Thank you for your attention。This story is a love story。 It is a coming of age story。 It is a story about family, by birth and by choice。 It is a story about living in the spotlight。 It is a story about coming out to family and fans。 It is a story about finding acceptance and support in the most unexpected of places。Gonzales and Dietrich wrote an amazing story about a very popular boy band experiencing growing pains during the F Bomb Ahead。。。 Don't open the spoiler if you don't want to see it。。。 Thank you for your attention。This story is a love story。 It is a coming of age story。 It is a story about family, by birth and by choice。 It is a story about living in the spotlight。 It is a story about coming out to family and fans。 It is a story about finding acceptance and support in the most unexpected of places。Gonzales and Dietrich wrote an amazing story about a very popular boy band experiencing growing pains during their world tour。 There is a lot of behind the scenes drama because Chorus Management is forcing the 4 band members to hide things about themselves or outright lie about things so they can "sell" the band to the fans。This story has a beautiful ending, but getting there is full of pain, addiction, and one very problematic mother。 I loved how much stronger everyone is on the other side of their struggle。 (view spoiler)[Except Geoff, of course。 Fuck that guy! I was obsessed in the first half, it was amazing and everything I needed。 But I always get a bit suspicious when they’re together before the 50% mark (and they were together well before then)I do like that it went more into depth about the other band mates and the toxic company/tour lifestyle but I just got sooooooo bored。 It was too deep and the constant feeling of dreadful just wasn’t worth it。Even when it was interesting content (like Angels storyline) I didn’t really care。 I skim read from 5 I was obsessed in the first half, it was amazing and everything I needed。 But I always get a bit suspicious when they’re together before the 50% mark (and they were together well before then)I do like that it went more into depth about the other band mates and the toxic company/tour lifestyle but I just got sooooooo bored。 It was too deep and the constant feeling of dreadful just wasn’t worth it。Even when it was interesting content (like Angels storyline) I didn’t really care。 I skim read from 50%-73% and I decided to DNF because I felt like I was rereading the same story arc again and again with the same outcome。 Must be noted I adored all the boys and Jon and Angel might be two of my fav characters! This book gave me so much more than I expected。 I thought it would be a fun read, but it also had so much depth to it。 It actually made me pretty stressed at points。 The complexity of the characters shows the strong understanding the authors have of the characters。 Also…I’m sorry, but this is definitely inspired by real life。

I was really looking forward to this read and was worried that it would not live up to the hype。 A romance in a boy band? Um, yes, sign me up! Sounds amazing! I don't want to get my hopes up but。。。 let's just say I would not be mad if there was more! IF THIS GETS OUT is the love story of Ruben and Zach, two members of the 4-man boy band, Saturday, who fall in love。 Ruben has been out of the closet in his personal life for years but isn't allowed to come out publicly, while Zach has some soul searching to do as his feelings for his best friend become more than friendly。 While they're on a European concert tour, they don't have much time or space to figure out their budding romance with their regimented schedule of concerts, interviews, and ph IF THIS GETS OUT is the love story of Ruben and Zach, two members of the 4-man boy band, Saturday, who fall in love。 Ruben has been out of the closet in his personal life for years but isn't allowed to come out publicly, while Zach has some soul searching to do as his feelings for his best friend become more than friendly。 While they're on a European concert tour, they don't have much time or space to figure out their budding romance with their regimented schedule of concerts, interviews, and photo shoots, not to mention the restrictions from their manager on their carefully curated public image。 Throw in the fact that one of their bandmates is the manager's son and the other might be developing a drug problem, and you have a recipe for high drama。This book is everything I wanted it to be! Along with the tension and drama that surrounds Zach and Ruben's relationship and their being kept in the closet, it has plenty of funny and sweet moments along the way to make the reader fall in love with these wonderful characters。 While Jon and Angel, who fill out the band, take a backseat to Zach and Ruben, they each have distinct personalities and character arcs, and all the boys of Saturday have unique relationships with one another。 Their relationships with their parents and their fans are also compelling and add to the conflict。This paragraph is mildly spoilery, but one especially well done element of the book is how the management team and the fans slowly switch places over the span of the story。 In the beginning, we get to know some of the specific people on the management side, and they seem to be on the boys' team against the ever volatile Public。 But as the story progresses, management becomes colder and more distant, while the fans show more nuance and give the boys the actual support they need。 It's quite lovely。Definitely read IF THIS GETS OUT when it comes out December 7th! It has plenty of angst and a healthy dose of comedy and romance, all among relatable and lovable main characters。 。。。more

I never planned to read If This Gets Out。 I thought it was just Larry fanfiction that managed to get published, but then I saw the author names。 Now that I'm older and much wiser, I've come to realize that I never should have had that attitude at all。 By classifying this as Larry fanfiction, I encourage the shipping of Larry, and maybe I'm doing that by mentioning Larry too, but shut up。 I think the annoying Larries got to my head。 Anyway, I recognize that something like this could happen in rea I never planned to read If This Gets Out。 I thought it was just Larry fanfiction that managed to get published, but then I saw the author names。 Now that I'm older and much wiser, I've come to realize that I never should have had that attitude at all。 By classifying this as Larry fanfiction, I encourage the shipping of Larry, and maybe I'm doing that by mentioning Larry too, but shut up。 I think the annoying Larries got to my head。 Anyway, I recognize that something like this could happen in real life, which is very sad to think about。SynopsisIf This Gets Out is about bandmates Ruben and Zach, who fall in love with each other over the course of their world tour。 When they decide to go public with their relationship, will their management silence their voices?ReviewIn addition to the above, If This Gets Out follows Angel - another bandmate of theirs, who is struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction。 Their fourth bandmate, Jon, plays a role in the story, but it's not as prominent。If This Gets Out discusses a plethora of issues present in the music community that need to be spoken about, such as the lengths a management company will go to restrain its clients, and the disrespect given to marginalized people in the industry。 It also tackles the lives of idols, and the issue of how they must look and act perfect all of the time。 Most of all, it tackles queerness, and the pressure of staying in the closet。 It discusses how important it is to live your truth, and how no one and no thing should strip you of the right to do so。 It emphasizes the fact that who you are shouldn't be anything you need to hide for the sake of "protecting others", because it is simply another thing that comes with your existence。 Overall, it was a very poignant and relevant book。 I was satisfied by how the challenging conflicts the protagonists endured were depicted。I deducted a star from my rating because I felt that this book could have been fine-tuned in a lot of areas。 For one, we were told that the bandmates were close friends with each other, but we didn't see any of that。 They interacted a lot, but I feel like the depiction of their overall friendship could have been improved more。 I also thought that the beginning of this book was incorrectly paced。 I didn't like how it was pre-established that Ruben already liked Zach, and I felt that it would have been better if he came to realize his feelings only as he spent more time with Zach。Lastly, I was surprised by how this book was classified as YA。 Maybe I'm not well-versed in the line between YA and NA classifications, but this book had scenes that I'm sure I would've belonged more in NA books。 Yes, they're fade-to-black, but there is a lot of action depicted before the fade to black is done。 The authors don't hesitate in saying what it is they're doing, whether it's about the name of the act itself or the materials done to do it。The characters were being safe, of course, and I'm not against discussing those things in books。 After all, I've read plenty of NA books before。 It's only that I think this book would have made more sense if it was classified as NA, and the characters were just aged up。 I've never seen things like that put into a YA book, and it was very surprising。 This isn't negative criticism of the book itself, just something I thought I should mention。 It wasn't overly explicit, and it did fade to black eventually, but it was there all the same。ConclusionIf This Gets Out is a book that I'm confident will resonate with queer readers, and even readers of all kinds。 Ruben and Zach have storylines that are very relatable and realistic, even if their characters are world famous pop stars。 It was overall well-paced, and it was filled with thrilling and emotional moments that were so immersive, it was terrifying to read。 It began and wrapped up storylines well, and it felt very empowering。 By the end of it, readers will have no choice but to root for Zach and Ruben's relationship, as well as all of the characters that helped them along the way。 。。。more

As it was, though, it struck a nice balance。There is nothing too terribly surpring about this book- what you see is what you get and I for one appreciate that。 It was a quick read with a maybe slightly unrealistically neatly wrapped-up ending but I personally deeply appreciate the hopefulness of it and had a smile on my face。 。。。more

Zach is so different from Ruben in this sense。 He hasn't learn to chase his own dreams no matter what。 He has a supportive mother, in contrast with Ruben。 He doesn't come from a rich background。 He isn't that suspicious of Chorus。 Their relationship advances and they both grow up, they learn each other, they learn from each other, they lean on each other, they push each other to fight for themselves more。 They have their arguments and their fights and their insecurities, but in the end they have each other, and this is just it。 This is what matters for them。 And yes I'm a sucker for couples who are sweet and sappy on each other。The band friendships are also another special aspect of the book。 Angel is a rebel who is forced to opress his real self, and he copes with alcohol and substances, leading him to a dark place。 He is a party animal, a wild spirit, a force of nature。 Jon is the quiet, loyal and well-spoken member of the group, who wants to just sing and be with his band, not be a sex symbol or a pretty boy or show skin like Chorus (and his dad) want to。 He cares about the band's image and PR, but not more than he cares about his friends。 I'm not sure how much of what Chorus does in the books happens in real-life in the music industry。 I hope the situation is better and some things were exagerrated for dramatic effect, because artists signing contracts which give control to their private lives to others is messed up and should not be happening in the real world。This is a book for everyone : for people who love boybands, for people who love boys rom-coms, for people who want to read about the dark side of the music industry, for people who enjoy a character-driven story。If This Gets Out has earned its place in the shelf of my favourite books ever ! 。。。more

TW: addiction, homophobia, toxic relationship with parents。This book made me feel a lot of things, it made me want to cry and smile so hard I felt dizzy。I truly hated how they were treated but I know that a lot of famous people (especially queer famous people) are treated this way by their management, which is very disappointing and sad。I loved the whole band, their relationship made me feel safe。Ruben and Zach were so relatable in so many ways (except the famous part) so it was great representa TW: addiction, homophobia, toxic relationship with parents。This book made me feel a lot of things, it made me want to cry and smile so hard I felt dizzy。I truly hated how they were treated but I know that a lot of famous people (especially queer famous people) are treated this way by their management, which is very disappointing and sad。I loved the whole band, their relationship made me feel safe。Ruben and Zach were so relatable in so many ways (except the famous part) so it was great representation。 I think that their song is “Daylight” by Taylor Swift。Lovely book, if you haven’t already, read it。 。。。more
